The Challenge
Inconsistent performance data limiting optimisation potential
The organisation managed a portfolio of environments where temperature, humidity, air quality, and energy consumption were all significant factors in operational performance and occupant comfort. However, data on these parameters was collected inconsistently, often through manual processes or isolated building management systems that did not communicate with one another.
Without a reliable, continuous data stream, environmental conditions were managed reactively. Complaints triggered investigations rather than proactive adjustment, and opportunities to optimise performance were identified only retrospectively, if at all.
The Approach
Structured sensing combined with analytical software tools
The approach began with a systematic assessment of what was being measured, what was not, and where the most significant gaps existed between available data and the decisions that needed to be informed by it. This assessment identified the parameters most critical to environmental performance and the locations where sensing would deliver the greatest insight.
A deployment plan was developed to introduce sensing incrementally, beginning with the areas of highest impact and expanding progressively as the data infrastructure matured. The analytics platform was configured in parallel, ensuring that data was immediately useful from the point of first capture.
The Solution
Data-driven monitoring platform supporting continuous evaluation
Salient Sense® environmental monitoring devices were deployed across the portfolio, capturing temperature, humidity, CO2 levels, and other relevant parameters at consistent intervals. The devices were positioned to reflect the actual conditions experienced by occupants and equipment, rather than relying on single-point measurements that often misrepresented the broader environment.
Salient Vision® processed the incoming data, establishing baselines for normal performance and surfacing deviations through automated alerts. The platform also enabled longitudinal analysis, allowing operational teams to assess whether interventions were producing sustained improvement or only temporary effect.
The Outcome
Improved understanding of environmental performance
The organisation achieved a materially better understanding of how its environments actually performed under real conditions. The continuous data stream replaced assumptions with evidence, enabling operational teams to make adjustments based on what was happening rather than what was expected to be happening.
Environmental complaints reduced as conditions were managed more proactively, and energy consumption associated with heating, cooling, and ventilation was refined based on actual demand rather than fixed schedules. The data also provided a defensible record of environmental conditions, supporting compliance and reporting requirements.
